WHO To Recommend Countries Stop Testing For H1N1
Within the next few days, the WHO "will recommend that countries stop trying to test all suspected cases of swine flu, said Keiji Fukuda, the agency"s assistant director-general of health security and environment," Tuesday during a conference call with reporters, Bloomberg reports. Instead, countries who have previously confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus in their population should diagnose the flu based on symptoms alone, opening up "laboratories to test samples in unusual or severe cases, clusters of illnesses and cases with odd symptoms, he said," Bloomberg writes (Serafino/Hallam, 7/7).

RCN Calls For EU Agreement On Sharps Injuries To Be Implemented Quickly
The Royal College of Nursing welcomed the signing of a joint agreement by European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) and the European Hospital and Healthcare Employers Association (HOSPEEM). This is an EU-wide agreement which the RCN has played a key role in bringing about to prevent one million medical sharps injuries per year. Advanced Prostate Cancer - New Review On PROSTVAC(TM) Published By Key Investigators From NCI

A just published Review in the publication "Expert Opinion on Investigational Drugs", Volume 18, Issue 7 2009, confirms the previous published information on PROSTVAC(TM). This is the most comprehensive and updated Review on PROSTVAC(TM) so far. Quote from the article: "Preliminary clinical trials have indicated negligible toxicity, and Phase II trials have suggested a survival benefit after treatment with PROSTVAC(TM), especially in patients with indolent disease characteristics." Anders Hedegaard, President & CEO of Bavarian Nordic said: "We are very pleased that the scientific experts once again confirm their positive view on PROSTVAC(TM) and the potential use of the vaccine in earlier stages of the disease. We are looking forward to publish more data at a later stage." Background information: PROSTVAC(TM) is a therapeutic vaccine moving into late stage clinical development that has the potential to extend the lives of people with advanced prostate cancer. Administered subcutaneously, it induces a specific, targeted immune response that attacks prostate cancer cells. Conventional chemotherapy currently used to treat prostate cancer has limited survival rates and is often associated with numerous side effects. In contrast, PROSTVAC(TM) has the potential to extend survival with improved quality of life. PROSTVAC is being developed in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with Bavarian Nordic"s U.S.-based subsidiary, BN ImmunoTherapeutics.
