Rising Lifestyle Illnesses And Potential Swine Flu Catastrophe For Indigenous Populations
The first of two reviews in this week"s edition of The Lancet discusses the standards of health and lifestyles of Indigenous people. It is the work of Professor Michael Gracey, of the Unity of First People of Australia, Perth, WA, Australia, and Professor Malcolm King, of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. There are almost 400 million Indigenous people in the world with low standards of health that are usually linked to malnutrition, poverty, environmental contamination, and prevalent infections. However, as those people shift to more modern or "western" lifestyles, conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes have been on the rise. Physical, social and mental disorders related to misuse of alcohol and other drugs are also increasing. Indigenous people must be encouraged and given the means to take responsibility for issues that affect their health. In this review, the authors discuss indigenous people worldwide but focus on Aboriginal Australians.

Soaring Summer Temperatures Spell Danger: What To Do To Protect Yourself
From the west to east coast, Americans are experiencing record-breaking temperatures. Some states are reporting triple-digit numbers and the heat has been the cause of several reported deaths. "Children and the elderly are considered the most vulnerable population. It is harder for their bodies to respond to these high temperatures," said Richard N. Bradley, M.D., associate professor of emergency medicine and chief of EMS and disaster medicine at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

Lupus Foundation Of America Web Chat Explores "Your Skin And Lupus"

Approximately two-thirds of the 1.5 million Americans living with lupus will develop some type of skin disease. Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system is unbalanced causing it to become destructive to any organ and tissue in the body. Skin disease in lupus can cause rashes or sores (lesions), most of which will appear on sun-exposed areas, such as a person"s face, ears, neck, arms, and legs. In addition, 40-70 percent of people with systemic lupus will find that their disease is made worse by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight or artificial light. For this and other reasons, people with lupus are advised to take steps to protect themselves from exposure to UV light. Summertime presents a challenge for people with lupus as vacations, leisure activities and household tasks can increase time outdoors, increasing risk of lupus flares. In addition, people with lupus are also at risk for other skin problems.
