Scientists Follow Live Infection By Food-poisoning Bacteria Listeria
Scientists in Portugal and France managed to follow the patterns of gene expression in food-poisoning bacteria Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) live during infection for the first time. The work about to be published in PLoS Pathogens shows how the bacterial genome shifts to better adapt to infection by activating genes involved in virulence and subversion of the host defences, as well as adaptation to the host conditions. This is the first time that the molecular interactions between L. monocytogenes and its host, as they occur during the different steps of infection, are followed in real time paving the way, not only to the development of new therapies against this potentially lethal bacterium, but also for the study of other pathogen/host interactions.

North Carolina Residents Should Urge Lawmakers To Continue Funding HIV Program, Opinion Piece Says
The North Carolina legislature has proposed to eliminate the HIV Medicaid Case Management program, which "provides crucial support to people living with HIV, helping them access medical care, medications and the support services needed to live healthier lives," Jacquelyn Clymore of the Alliance of AIDS Services-Carolina and Beth Stringfield, member of the North Carolina AIDS Action Network, write in a Durham News opinion piece, adding, "We need to call legislators and let them know how important this program is to those living with HIV and ask them to return the program and its funding to the budget." They continue, "It is likely that additional budget cuts to HIV programs will be proposed, and we must speak out in support of state HIV prevention funding" (Clymore/Stringfield, Durham News, 6/13).

What Is Allergic Conjunctivitis? What Causes Allergic Conjunctivitis?
Most people get allergic conjunctivitis when their eyes come into contact with an allergen - a substance which makes the body"s immune system overreact. The eye becomes sore, inflamed and sometimes painful. Symptoms occur because the overreacting immune system makes the body release histamine and other active substances by mast cells - these cause dilation of blood vessels (blood vessels expand, widen), which irritates the nerve endings and causes increased secretion of tears.

New British Dental Association Online Training Brings Qualification In Oral Health Education To DCPs

A new online training course from the British Dental Association (BDA) that qualifies dental care professionals (DCPs) to advise patients on oral health has been launched. Combining theoretical knowledge and the development of communication skills, the course aims to see DCPs put an enhanced skill-set into practice with confidence. Over a period of eight weeks, the Oral Health Education for Dental Care Professionals course guides participants through 27 "bite-sized" modules comprising mini-lectures complemented by animated videos and diagrams. A dedicated tutor supports participants, and a textbook, revision notes and mock exams are also provided. In dialogue with a supervising dentist, the participant will also identify and work with patients who would especially benefit from oral health advice. This process involves the creation of a portfolio which, along with a written exam, leads to a National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) Certificate in Oral Health Education, a nationally recognised qualification. The course has been developed in collaboration with OHE Southwest, Bristol, which has been running successful oral health education programmes since 1996. The new online format not only allows for improved access and flexibility for participants, but also provides a cost-effective alternative which ensures the value of enhanced patient care, career development and CPD hours. The cost of the course is ÷£475 per student, with a concessionary rate of ÷£425 per student for staff employed by BDA members.
