'Beating' Heart Machine Expedites Development Of New Surgical Tools, Techniques
A machine developed at North Carolina State University in Raleigh may allow researchers to expedite development of new tools and techniques for heart surgery. The dynamic heart system pumps fluid through a pig heart so that it continues to function like a live heart even after it"s been removed from the animal"s body. The machine will allow researchers to test and refine surgical technologies in a realistic surgical environment without the cost and time associated with animal or clinical trials, its developers say.

Now, after an initial study, it seems that McDonald is on to something. The new study is available online in the journal Medical Hypothesis and will appear in the forthcoming issue of the journal.

Patient Care Guideline Released By Society For Vascular Nursing

The Society for Vascular Nursing (SVN) has released the first in a series of guidelines being developed that will focus on the nursing care of patients with vascular disease. Working as a collective group of experts, members of SVN have developed guidelines based on the latest available evidence supporting patient care, 2009 Clinical Practice Guideline for Patients Undergoing Endovascular Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA), which appears in the June issue of the Journal of Vascular Nursing published by Elsevier. The intent of the guideline is to improve outcomes for patients undergoing endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms and ensure continuity of care across the population. It addresses assessment, diagnostic studies, medications, interventions and education in preoperative, perioperative and postoperative care. Task force member, Theresa DeVeaux, MS, ACNP-BC, CVN, commented "We anticipate this publication to be the landmark for best patient care practice in vascular nursing."
