NCPA To Congress: Health Reform Should Empower Community Pharmacies To Improve Patient Outcomes, Reduce Costs

"Blog Watch" offers readers a roundup of health policy-related blog posts.Bloggers are tentatively reacting to a report and blog post released by the Congressional Budget Office that summarizes the agency"s approach to estimating the cost of any health overhaul bills. At issue is how CBO will count different stipulations of legislation -- like an individual mandate or a public plan -- and whether their conclusions will result in a heftier price tag. Douglas Elmendorf explained on the Director"s Blog: "In CBO"s view, the key consideration is whether a proposal would be making health insurance an essentially governmental program, tightly controlled by the federal government with little choice available to those who offer and buy health insurance -- or whether the system would provide significant flexibility in terms of the types, prices, and number of private-sector sellers of insurance available to people. The former -- a governmental program -- belongs in the federal budget (including all premiums paid by individuals and firms to private insurers), but the latter -- a largely private-sector system -- does not." Janet Adamy of the Wall Street Journal"s Washington Wire notes that the report doesn"t address the cost estimates of the scenarios. Alan Katz on his Health Care Reform Blog concludes, "the message is clear: the looser government"s hand grips the new health care system the smaller its budgetary impact." Liberal bloggers had a variety of reactions -- some found the report too vague, while others saw it as good news. The New Republic"s Jonathan Cohn says, "you may need a Talmudic scholar to figure out what those implications are." Cohn continues, "Other passages in the briefing are [similarly] vexing and, for what it"s worth, the reactions I"ve gotten from insiders familiar with the report have ranged from sighs of relief to statements not suitable for a family blog." Ezra Klein agrees the report lacks specificity, but says, "Even so, I"m cheered by the simple existence of this ruling. The fact that CBO is explaining its thinking before legislation arrives [is] yet more evidence that CBO appears, insofar as it can, to be trying to help out on health reform. ... Access Pharmaceuticals Announces Publication Of Thiarabine Combination Data
ACCESS PHARMACEUTICALS, INC. (OTC Bulletin Board: ACCP), announced that new Thiarabine preclinical efficacy data will shortly be published demonstrating that thiarabine combined with clofarabine provides much greater antitumor activity than achieved by either agent alone. In one colorectal cancer model, 66% of mice were cured of their tumors. The publication which will appear in the journal "Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology," was based on work conducted by Access" collaborators at the Southern Research Institute. The paper is entitled "Enhancement of the in vivo antitumor activity of clofarabine by 1-beta-D-[4-thio-arabinofuranosyl]-cytosine" (thiarabine).

President Obama Receives Warm Welcome From AMA Physicians

The American Medical Association warmly welcomed U.S. President Barack Obama to its 158th annual meeting in Chicago. Like the president, the AMA is committed to health reform this year that provides all Americans with affordable, high-quality health coverage. "We have a historic opportunity for reform this year, and the AMA is actively working for health reform that covers the uninsured, makes insurance more affordable, increases the value our nation receives from its health-care spending and enhances prevention and wellness for patients," said Dr. Nielsen. "Our message to the president and the American public is that the AMA is committed to achieving reform this year so that all Americans have affordable, high-quality health coverage," said AMA President Nancy H. Nielsen, M.D. Highlighting physicians" commitment to their patients, President Obama said to a standing ovation that "you did not enter this profession to be bean-counters and paper-pushers. You entered this profession to be healers - and that"s what our health care system should let you be." "The relationship between a patient and physician is the heart of health care, and we support reforms that preserve that relationship and keep medical decisions in the hands of patients and physicians," said Dr. Nielsen. President Obama also recognized that it "will be hard to make some of these changes if doctors feel like they are constantly looking over their shoulder for fear of lawsuits." He also acknowledged the cost of defensive medicine in the health system. "We are very pleased that President Obama has expressed an openness to medical liability reform as part of comprehensive health reform," said Dr. Nielsen. "Liability reform is clearly needed to help doctors implement best-practices in patient care and reduce unnecessary health costs." President Obama said "I need your help, doctors.
