International Stem Cell Collaboration Results In Discovery Of Promising New Stem Cell Type
DaVinci Biosciences LLC in collaboration with University of Utah, Southern California Center for Regenerative Medicine and Omni Hospital in Ecuador, announce the discovery of a previously unidentified stem cell population from adult human testis in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications (BBRC), an international peer-reviewed journal focused on the rapid dissemination of timely and significant experimental results in diverse fields of biological research. Termed gonadal stem cells (GSCs) these adult derived stem cells, unlike previous reported population of stem cells found within the testis, have been found to demonstrate adult stem cell properties. Published in the current journal of Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, the data from this collaborative study describes a multipotent adult stem cell population that has the capacity to readily differentiate into multiple cell types. The study evolved from an international collaboration aimed at identifying novel cell populations at different geographical laboratory locations and for different HLA types.

With Health Reform Uncertain, Maryland Hospitals Consolidate
"Facing difficult economic times and the uncertainties of national health care reform, some Maryland hospitals are choosing to be swallowed up by larger medical systems, with an unusual string of mergers over the past 16 months and more likely on the way," The Baltimore Sun reports. The consolidations could offer benefits to all those involved. Small hospitals gain "the hope of safe harbor from whatever financial storms are on the horizon, hospital chains "get footholds in new areas, where they can build market share and increase the number of patients they serve," and patients may "gain access to large networks of top-notch doctors, even if the patients live many miles from a major medical institution."

The School Nutrition Association"s 2008 National School Lunch Week Campaign, "Vote for School Lunch - Presidential Edition," was honored by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) with a 2009 Summit Award. The award will be presented to SNA during the 10th Annual Summit Awards Dinner, September 29, 2009 at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC. The "Vote for School Lunch - Presidential Edition" was the culmination of SNA"s most successful National School Lunch Week campaign. Students elected the president of school lunch, selecting from a healthy choice of candidates: Pete Pizza, Biff Burger and three candidates designed by students: Gloria Grilled Cheese, Larry Lasagna and Petunia Pita Pocket. Almost 300,000 votes were cast which was an all time record. Pete Pizza won with 42.7% of the vote and was elected "President of School Lunch". Supported by SNA"s 55,000 members, the campaign delivered important nutrition messages to students regarding healthy school meals. Coinciding with the 2008 presidential elections, the Vote for School Lunch campaign gave kids the opportunity to vote for their own president - the President of School Lunch! During October"s National School Lunch Week, students across the country enjoyed healthy and nutritious samples of each "candidate," allowing them to make a well informed vote. "We are very excited to receive this incredible honor," SNA Executive Director Barbara Belmont remarked. "The Vote for School Lunch campaign was a wonderful program that taught children about the benefits of healthy school meals." The Summit Award is highest honor bestowed by ASAE on associations that implement innovative community-based programs. The award is a part of the Association Advance America awards program.
